Mixtape Friday

The last mix tape was about seven months ago but that doesn't mean I haven't been collecting new music in anticipation of a new mix tape.  There's been a bevy a new good music, some of which I have added to this new mix which has more of a 70's rock/psych/pop rock.  Hopefully I can start pushing these out more often.  I steered away from the 8tracks playlists since they started charging money but I think they may have switched back to free again so I'll look into that again.  (For those who don't have or don't like Spotify)

Below is a shot of the guitarist for Timmy the Teeth.

Shot with a Yashica D and pushed the Porta 800 film one stop.

Here is the latest mix tape.

Mixtape Friday

Well its been six months.....seems like another lifetime ago since I posted a mixtape.  Its been tough to discover new music, go out to new shows, but I've been trying to make a push toward the end of the year.  So after a long hiatus, here is my next mix.  My next mix after this will most likely be my top albums and songs of the year.

Mixtape Friday

I started out thinking this mix was going to  be a real rowdy mix to get me excited for summer but I ended up scaling back and doing a little bit of a hybrid mix.  There is quite a bit of new music in this as well.  Mac Demarco, !!!, Spoon, Generationals, White Reaper, SWIMM (as pictured above) etc. Generally spring and fall are the hot time to release albums and 2017 has started off well.

Anyway enjoy

Mixtape Friday

New tape is out.  Starts out slow and builds, then slows, then builds again till the end.  Excited to see Sego play a couple times this weekend.

Here is a shot from their last show.

Here is the mix. Enjoy

Mixtape Friday

Well it went from winter to spring really quickly.  Although I don't think this is the last of the snow, it sure is nice to lounge around outside once again.

When I made this mix it was more wintery so the songs have a little less tempo but I added some pep to it.

Enjoy

Mixtape Friday

Well its been six months since I've posted a Mixtape.....must be Spring in the air even though its February.  (It was almost 60 degrees today in Utah).

So I think one reason I have waited on my next mixtape was because it involved a genre that people think is silly or weird.....and it is kind of.  But for some reason I have been listening to it non-stop for the last year.  Its Vaporwave.

Vaporwave is hard to define in a specific way but generally it is this: It is characterized by a nostalgic or surrealist fascination with entertainment, technology and advertising of the 1980s and 1990s.

The music themes are generally lounge music, elevator music, infomerical music and smooth jazz which are either sampled or produced by the artist but can also have a more deep house sound with slowed down samples of popular music.  Most of it is instrumental but if there is anyone singing, the voice is almost always slowed down to where it nearly resembles Rick Astley.  It ranges from short 30 second clips with most repeating beats to longer 2 min songs that repeat most of the time, to longer 7 to 10 min songs that are slower and more atmospheric.

Now Vaporwave can not only be music, but it can be art which can also be called Glitch art.

Here is an example:

It usually is obsessed with Windows 3.1, VHS cassettes, palm trees and things written in Japanese.

Anyway, now that I've completely justified why I like this music, here is my first mix.  A couple of artists I wish I could add but are not on Spotify unfortunately.  I'd recommend listening to it at work with your headphones.....I've never gotten so much work done in my life.

Mixtape Friday

It seems like too long in between mix tape posts but life is busy.
Fall is such a nostalgic time for me so it was easy for me to bring a mix of
old times, but instead I went with newer tunes that have a strong taste of psychedelia
to them, some rock, some sweet synth diddies in there as well.  But all and all its trends
toward the more mellow with the exception of a few.
For those that actually read this......<sigh> you're great.

Mixtape Friday

Well its almost been four months since my last mix.  Had quite a few things happen that put making mix lower on the priority list.  But I'm back on the wagon ready to make more mixes.....I just hope whoever listens to these mixes likes what I'm putting out there.

It can be found on 8 tracks

or Spotify

On a side note, I saw Deerhoof recently and took this picture.  They are amazing live.  I've featured their song "The Devil and his Anarchic Surrealist Retinue" as the first track on the mix.

Mixtape Friday

I had to take some time off from the playlists after the time consuming end of the year lists I compiled that took forever.  I should be posting about how amazing the Eyes Lips Eyes reunion concert was last weekend but I ended up missing it.  It was probably the only major show I've missed of theirs ever....and it happened to be their last show in all likelihood.

Anyway,  I'm put together a pretty solid pop playlist.  I needed a good boosting playlist after missing that concert.

Enjoy.

Mixtape Friday

As I was working on this week's mix I noticed that nearly all of the songs I was picking had lead female vocals so I decided to make the entire mix lead female vocals only.  For as long as I can remember I've gone through long stretches where I just listened to bands with female lead vocals.  I have no idea why but as I saw when I was putting a mix together, my ear tends to trend in that direction quite often.  The mix is full of songs that I've liked from as old as 1980 and as new as 2015

Enjoy!

Mixtape Friday

Fall is here in Utah.  It was 90 last weekend and now its only 70.  Although the summer is gone, fall brings some great new music and new tours.  All of the bands are finally done with all the summer festivals. Anyway, here's a new mix to bring in autumn in all of its glory.

Mixtape Friday

Well, I posted my post summer depressed mix last week on Spotify.  Didn't have time to post it on 8 tracks or on here.  However, I came prepared this week as school is back in session and all the college students are back clogging the streets, restaurants and movie theaters and annoying everyone in their path.  This weeks mix is a bit more upbeat then the previous introduction.  Its full of some great new indie pop from friends like SWIMM and Sego to more indie heavy weights like Panda Bear and Of Montreal.

I threw this playlist together in a hurry when I usually take my time. It has mostly older music (older than 3 years old), but a couple of new tracks as well. Just something to transition you from work to the weekend.
