Melancholy Monday

Another Monday has graced us with its presence.  The song that I picked to represent it is a bit of an oldie...1995 to be exact, "Hello Rain" by The Softies.  Two guitars and two voices is all they need.  Its like a lullabye for a depressed person to fall asleep to.  I love it though, its perfect for those days that a little more drab.  Monday's are tough....especially for those in the office space world in which I live in.....this just eases me into my cubicle and wraps a blanket around me.

Melancholy Monday

Well its another Melancholy Monday and the weather is complying with cloudy and rainy conditions.  My pick this week is "Brakhage" by Stereolab.  This is a song that I can listen to and just stare.  This goes on for  a few minutes until I snap out of it.  Its repetition is almost hypnotic.  It is not boring at all though....its anything but that.  But its so thought provoking for me that I get stuck day dreaming to it almost every time.  Usually this 60's french pop band is played in the sunshine and blue skies, but I prefer this song played in diffused light and grey skies.

Melancholy Monday

Well, the Super Bowl is over, the post-party blues are setting in as you sit down in your chair at work and just stare outside....yep this Monday is especially melancholy.  For me, songs can be depressing/sad/melancholy for different reasons.  Lyrics is obviously one of those elements that add to a songs mood.  Another that I've discovered about myself that is sometimes more powerful is just simple tones, sounds, chords, whatever you want to call them that bring out the emotions in me for some reason. I love to listen to songs that have distant vocals and airy, noisy guitar riffs when I'm in kind of a 'blah' mood when maybe some heavy things are on your mind and you're just not up for some fast paced happy music, but something that is a little slower and repetitive.  The song isn't depressing and you'll probably wonder why I think it fits the 'melancholy' mood, but its hard to explain how this song and other songs like it are a perfect fit for my more gloomy moods.  Over the course of weeks I hope to be able to better explain myself with the songs that I post.

For this week, that song is "The Farthest City" by Moscow Olympics.

Also, lets not forget that one of the best actors of our generation, Philip Seymour Hoffman, died yesterday of an apparent drug overdose.  A very sad loss to say the least.
