Well, the Super Bowl is over, the post-party blues are setting in as you sit down in your chair at work and just stare outside....yep this Monday is especially melancholy. For me, songs can be depressing/sad/melancholy for different reasons. Lyrics is obviously one of those elements that add to a songs mood. Another that I've discovered about myself that is sometimes more powerful is just simple tones, sounds, chords, whatever you want to call them that bring out the emotions in me for some reason. I love to listen to songs that have distant vocals and airy, noisy guitar riffs when I'm in kind of a 'blah' mood when maybe some heavy things are on your mind and you're just not up for some fast paced happy music, but something that is a little slower and repetitive. The song isn't depressing and you'll probably wonder why I think it fits the 'melancholy' mood, but its hard to explain how this song and other songs like it are a perfect fit for my more gloomy moods. Over the course of weeks I hope to be able to better explain myself with the songs that I post.
For this week, that song is "The Farthest City" by Moscow Olympics.
Also, lets not forget that one of the best actors of our generation, Philip Seymour Hoffman, died yesterday of an apparent drug overdose. A very sad loss to say the least.
I think that I need to start posting classic country songs to balance out your blog. My song for Melancholy Monday is "Sunday Morning Coming Down" by Kris Kristofferson
So is that a happy song to help balance it out or are you balancing out the spectrum of music that I post so I include different kinds? Either way I'm fine with.
